Overseas Trained Doctors (OTD) & Home Grown Talent (HGT)

The Medical Council of Australia (MCA) assesses whether an Overseas Trained Doctor is eligible for Registration. The State Medical Board grants registration if you are eligible. Thus, there are two steps in the process: assessment by Medical Council and Registration by Medical Board.

The State Medical Board may grant Registration with or without conditions. Registration without conditions is fully portable.

Australian Medical Council Examination is conducted by the Australian Medical Council to decide whether you are eligible for Full Registration.

If you are applying under certain categories (like areas of need) you need not sit for the Australian Medical Council Examination. Though such opportunities exist, only limited vacancies are available.

Australian Medical Council Examination consists of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) examination and Clinical examination. A candidate must pass the MCQ examination before proceeding to the clinical examination.

After passing the examination, you must contact the State Medical Board and complete the Registration process – click Resources link above.
